Fun Facts About Sushi!

A Fish-Saving Invention!

Did you know sushi started over 1,000 years ago in Japan? It wasn’t like the sushi we see today. It was originally a way to use fermented rice to keep fish fresh for a long time!

What is Nori Seaweed?

That dark green wrapper on many sushi rolls is called ‘nori.’ It’s a special kind of seaweed (an algae) that is harvested, dried, and pressed into thin, crisp sheets, perfect for holding all the yummy ingredients together.

The Surprising “California” Roll!

One of the most famous sushi rolls, the California Roll (with avocado and crab), wasn’t actually invented in Japan! It was created in North America (Canada or the USA) for people who were new to eating sushi.

Coloring Tips for Your Sushi Masterpiece

  • The Rice Texture Secret: To make the rice look textured, try this artist’s trick! Press hard with a white crayon to make tiny “rice” dots before you color. Then, when you lightly shade over it with a grey or light blue marker, the white dots will magically appear!
  • Creating Glossy Fish: How do you make the fish on nigiri look fresh and glossy? After coloring the salmon pink or the tuna red, take a darker red or pink pencil and add a small shadow line at the very bottom. Then, use a white pencil (or just leave the space blank) to add a bright “shine” line along the top edge.
  • The Colorful Extras: The little details make the artwork pop! Use your brightest, most vibrant green for the tiny dollop of wasabi. Then, use a soft, pale pink or light orange for the gari (pickled ginger). These small bursts of color will make your whole sushi plate look extra delicious.
