Fun Facts About the Mosasaurus!

Every great artist knows their subject. Before your pencils meet the page, discover the incredible story behind this ocean giant!

The Giant Sea Lizard, Not a Dinosaur

That’s right! While it lived with dinosaurs, the Mosasaurus wasn’t one. It was a massive, air-breathing marine reptile, more closely related to modern-day monitor lizards and snakes.

A Second Set of Teeth!

To hold onto slippery prey, the Mosasaurus had an extra set of teeth on the roof of its mouth (called palatal teeth). These sharp, backward-pointing teeth ensured that any captured fish or ammonite could only move in one direction!

As Long as a School Bus

This creature was an apex predator for a reason. Some species of Mosasaurus could grow over 50 feet (15 meters) long, making them one of the largest and most fearsome hunters in the ancient seas.

Coloring Tips for Your Mosasaurus Masterpiece

Unleash your inner artist and give this prehistoric titan the dramatic scene it deserves with these creative tips.

  • Create Ocean Depths: How can you make the ocean feel vast and deep? Start your artistic journey with deep navy blues and even purples at the bottom of the page. As you move toward the surface, blend in lighter aquas and teals. This gradient creates the illusion of sunlight filtering down, making your Mosasaurus look truly colossal in its underwater realm.
  • Capture Wet Skin Texture: This titan likely had dark, smooth scales. To capture this, use a base of deep gray, ocean blue, or even a dark olive green. Then, take a white crayon or gel pen and add subtle highlights along the curve of its back and fins. This simple trick mimics the effect of light reflecting off its wet, powerful body.
  • Tell an Epic Story: Every picture tells a story. What is your Mosasaurus doing? If it’s on the hunt, use bright, contrasting colors—like silver, yellow, or orange—for the tiny fish fleeing before it. This makes the scene “pop!” Is its eye calm and focused, or wild and fierce? The expression you give it changes the entire narrative of your artwork.
