Fun Facts About Crabs!

They Are Famous Sidewalkers

Most people know that crabs walk sideways, but do they know why? It is because their legs are attached to the sides of their bodies, and their joints bend outwards! It is much faster and easier for them to scuttle left or right than it is to move forward.

They Wear Their Skeletons on the Outside

Unlike humans, who have bones inside, crabs have a hard shell on the outside called an exoskeleton. This acts like a suit of armor to protect them. As they grow, they have to wiggle out of their old, tight shell to grow a bigger, brand-new one!

They Are Not Just Red

While a cooked crab is red, live crabs come in amazing colors! There are bright Blue Crabs, purple Vampire Crabs, and pale Ghost Crabs that blend into the white sand. This means the artist can use any color in their box to bring these creatures to life.

Coloring Tips for Your Crab Masterpiece

  • Creating the “Hard Shell” Look: To make the crab look like it has a hard, shiny shell, the artist can leave small white spots or use a very light shade of the main color on the rounded parts of the claws and back. This highlights the reflection of light underwater.
  • Texturing the Sand: Don’t just color the ground yellow! Try using a technique called “stippling” – making lots of little dots with a marker or pencil tip. This creates a grainy texture that looks exactly like real sand on the ocean floor.
  • Contrasting Backgrounds: If the crab is colored in warm colors like red, orange, or yellow, try coloring the water background in cool blues and greens. This contrast makes the main character pop right off the page!
