Fun Facts About Megalodon!
The Name Means “Big Tooth”
It is no surprise how this creature got its name. “Megalodon” comes from Greek and literally translates to “Big Tooth.” Paleontologists have found Megalodon teeth that are over 7 inches long – that is larger than a human hand! When coloring the open jaws on these pages, remember that these teeth were the shark’s most famous feature, designed to grab and break through bone.
Longer Than a School Bus
It can be hard to visualize just how big these animals were on a piece of paper. The Megalodon could grow up to 60 feet in length. To put that in perspective, that is longer than a standard yellow school bus and about three times the size of the largest Great White Shark recorded today. They were truly the kings of the prehistoric ocean.
A Menu of Whales
While modern sharks might hunt seals or fish, the Megalodon had a much heartier appetite. They were the apex predators of their time and often hunted primitive whales. Their jaws were strong enough to crush a car, making them the ultimate rulers of the ancient seas.
Coloring Tips for Your Megalodon Masterpiece
- Mastering Ocean Gradients: To create a realistic underwater atmosphere, try using a gradient technique for the water background. Start with a deep, dark navy blue at the bottom of the page and gradually blend it into a lighter turquoise or sky blue near the top. This mimics how sunlight filters through the ocean depths, placing the Megalodon deep in its mysterious habitat.
- Adding Texture and Battle Scars: These were tough creatures that lived dangerous lives. Instead of coloring the shark a flat grey, try using cross-hatching or stippling (small dots) to create a rough skin texture. An artist might even leave thin, jagged lines of white or pale pink across the shark’s nose or fins to represent “battle scars” from fights with other sea monsters.
- High Contrast Jaws: The mouth is the focal point of almost every Megalodon drawing. To make it look truly terrifying, use high contrast. Color the inside of the mouth a deep maroon or even black, but leave the teeth paper-white. This strong contrast draws the viewer’s eye straight to the shark’s most dangerous weapon.
