Fun Facts About Our Lady of Guadalupe!
The Miracle of the Winter Roses
Usually, flowers do not grow in the middle of winter, especially on cold, rocky hills! However, the story tells us that when Juan Diego climbed Tepeyac Hill in December, he found beautiful Castilian roses blooming in the frost. These bright pink and red flowers are often featured in the artwork, adding a splash of vibrant color to the scene.
A Map of the Stars
Art historians and astronomers have looked closely at the blue-green mantle (cloak) worn by the Lady in the original image. They discovered that the pattern of gold stars isn’t random! The stars are arranged to match the exact constellations that were in the Mexico sky on the morning of December 12, 1531.
The Cloak That Lasts Forever
The original image appeared on a “tilma,” which is a cloak made from cactus fibers. Usually, this type of rough fabric falls apart after only 15 or 20 years. However, the original Tilma of Our Lady of Guadalupe is still intact today, over 500 years later! It remains displayed in Mexico City, looking as beautiful as the day it first appeared.
Coloring Tips for Your Our Lady of Guadalupe Masterpiece
- Mastering the “Celestial Teal”: The mantle is traditionally a deep turquoise or teal color, representing the heavens. To add depth, the artist suggests using a dark blue for the shadowed folds of the cloth and blending it into a lighter teal or aqua where the light hits the fabric.
- Creating a Glowing Aura: Behind the figure, there are distinct rays of light (the sun). Instead of using a single flat yellow, try using a gradient. Start with a deep orange or gold near the body and fade it out into a bright lemon yellow or white at the tips of the rays to make it look like it is truly glowing.
- Texture for the Angel: At the bottom of the image, an angel holds the moon and the robe. Try using short, feathery strokes with a gray or light blue pencil to give the angel’s wings a soft, fluffy texture, contrasting with the smooth fabric of the dress.
