Fun Facts About Sheep!
The Secret of Square Eyes
Did you know that sheep have rectangular pupils? It might look a little silly close up, but this unique shape gives them amazing vision. It allows them to see almost 360 degrees around their bodies, meaning they can see behind themselves without even turning their heads!
Excellent Memory
Sheep are much smarter than they often get credit for. Research has shown that they have incredible memories. A sheep can recognize and remember at least 50 different sheep faces – and even human faces – for more than two years. They definitely know who their friends are in the flock.
The Never-Ending Coat
Unlike the fur on a dog or cat that sheds naturally, a sheep’s wool fleece usually just keeps on growing! This is why farmers give them a haircut, called shearing, once a year. It keeps the sheep cool in the summer and provides humans with warm wool for sweaters and blankets.
Coloring Tips for Your Sheep Masterpiece
- Mastering the “Fluffy” Texture: Capturing the look of wool can be tricky on a flat piece of paper. Instead of coloring in straight lines, try using small, tight circular strokes (scumbling) with a crayon or colored pencil. This technique mimics the curly texture of the fleece, making the sheep look huggable and soft.
- Shading White Wool: Coloring a white animal doesn’t mean leaving the paper blank! To make the sheep look 3D, use very light shades of pale blue, lavender, or cool gray to add shadows on the underside of the belly and around the neck. This “cool” shading makes the white parts pop even more.
- Contrasting Environments: Since the sheep are mostly light-colored, use vibrant, saturated colors for the background to make them stand out. A deep emerald green for the pasture or a bright azure blue for the sky will create a beautiful contrast against the soft, pale wool of the animals.
