Fun Facts About Veterans Day!

A Day That Began with Peace

Veterans Day was originally called “Armistice Day.” It marked the end of World War I in 1918, a day celebrated as the return of peace to the world.

Always on November 11th

No matter what day of the week it falls on, Veterans Day is always celebrated on November 11th. This honors the exact time the armistice was signed—the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.

The Symbol of the Red Poppy

Many people wear or display red poppies on Veterans Day. This tradition comes from a poem called “In Flanders Fields,” which described bright red poppies growing on the battlefields of World War I, symbolizing remembrance.

Coloring Tips for Your Veterans Day Masterpiece

  • A Patriotic Palette: These pages call for strong, proud colors. When coloring a flag, try using your crayon to create a subtle, fabric-like texture. Press a little harder on the edges of the red stripes to make them look like they are waving in the wind.
  • Shining Medals and Buttons: Many of our heroes wear medals, badges, and buttons. Don’t just color them yellow or gray! Use a bright gold or silver crayon. You can even layer a little brown or black underneath to make the metal look polished and real.
  • The Sky of Gratitude: The sky behind an eagle or a soldier sets the entire mood. Will it be a bright, hopeful morning blue? Or will you blend oranges, purples, and deep indigos to create a respectful sunset sky, honoring the end of a day of service?
