Fun Facts About Halloween!

The First Jack-o’-Lanterns

Did you know the first jack-o’-lanterns weren’t even pumpkins? People in Ireland originally carved spooky faces into turnips and potatoes to scare away spirits on All Hallows’ Eve!

An Ancient Celebration

Halloween is over 2,000 years old! It began as an ancient Celtic festival called Samhain, where people would light bonfires and wear costumes to blend in with roaming ghosts.

A Sweet Tradition

“Trick-or-treating” became a popular Halloween activity in America during the 1930s. It was seen as a friendly and fun way for neighbors to share treats and celebrate together.

Coloring Tips for Your Halloween Masterpiece

  • Create a Spooky Glow: To make a jack-o’-lantern’s light or a ghost’s aura really shine, color the very center with a bright yellow or white. Gently blend outwards with orange (for the pumpkin) or light blue (for the ghost), leaving the center brightest to create a glowing effect.
  • The Magical Night Sky: A Halloween sky is rarely just black! Create a mysterious twilight by blending dark blues, deep purples, and even a touch of dark gray. You can even use a white crayon to draw stars before coloring the sky, and they will magically appear!
  • Wonderful, Wicked Textures: Give your creatures character with details. Use short, crisscrossing lines to make a mummy’s bandages look old and ragged. Try stippling (making tiny dots) with different shades of green to give a friendly monster fuzzy fur.
