Fun Facts About Thanksgiving!
The First Feast Was a Marathon!
The very first Thanksgiving celebration wasn’t just one dinner. It was a massive harvest festival that lasted for three whole days, filled with food, games, and celebration!
The Parade Had Real Animals!
When the famous Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade first started in 1924, it didn’t have the giant balloons we see today. It featured real, live animals borrowed from the Central Park Zoo, like elephants, bears, and camels!
Only Toms “Gobble”
A male turkey is called a “tom,” and he’s the only one who makes that famous “gobble-gobble” sound to attract female turkeys (called “hens”). Hens make a much quieter clicking or chirping noise.
Coloring Tips for Your Thanksgiving Masterpiece
- Create a “Harvest” Palette: This holiday glows with warm colors. Create a cozy autumn feel by layering your shades. Start with a light yellow base on a pumpkin or leaf, blend in streaks of bright orange, and then add bold red or deep brown to the edges. This blending makes the colors look rich and vibrant, like a real fall sunset.
- Give Your Turkey Texture: How do you make a turkey look ready for the feast? Use a dark brown for the shadows (like under the wing or leg) and a lighter tan or golden color for the highlights where the light hits. You can even add tiny dots of white with a gel pen to make the skin look shiny and roasted!
- Weave a Magical Cornucopia: The “horn of plenty” is a classic symbol. To make the basket look woven, don’t just color it flat brown. Use a light brown crayon to draw curved lines going one way, then cross them with a darker brown crayon going the other way. This simple trick creates an amazing woven texture that looks real enough to hold fruit.
